In Conversation with Sami A. Abrams
Q. What inspired you to write this book?
A. So many things.LIS tasked me with a K9 search and rescue story, and I knew I wanted Goose, my daughter’s dog, to be my model for the K9. He’s extra special and ended up being the star of the book. In addition to the canine hero, I also wanted to tackle a little bit of PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries. That became a challenge to tie it all together, but very important to talk about.
Q. Who are the main characters and what makes them so special?
A. Michael Lane is an ex-DEA after almost dying in an explosion in Witness Escape. He’s dealing with a balance issue and PTSD. He feels like he’s floundering in life.
Tori Campbell is a single mom and military widow who never lets anyone see the real her. She thinks she has to be what everyone expects.
Q. What was the most challenging part of writing this book?
A. Since this story takes place in the wilderness, trying to keep the investigation going while out in the woods was challenging. It also limited the ways I could put my characters in danger.
Q. What suprised you about writing this novel?
A. LOL! I have to laugh at this. I’m always surprised by the villain. I never know who it will be until I write the ending. So, when the bad guy stepped forward, it shocked me who was behind the attempts on the characters’ lives. (No. I’m not kidding. hehe!)
Q. What are you plans for future novels?
A. During the epilogue, you meet some of the guys from Tori’s deceased husband’s army unit. I’d love to do a spin-off series with these men. As of right now, I don’t have plans to write them, but I’m hoping to make it happen.
Q. What advice do you have for apsiring authors?
A. Keep going. Never quit. Writing and publication is a slow process. If you get a rejection, write another story and then another. You’ll grow with each story and get better and better.
Q. Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or books you’re working on?
A. The first book in my next Love Inspired Suspense four-book series will come out at the end of October this year. Book one, Christmas Rodeo Killer, is finished, and I’m currently working on book two.
Q. Let’s finish with this one–coffee, tea, or water–what will readers find in your mug/glass?
A. I’m a do not talk to me until I’ve had my coffee girl. After that, it’s mostly water. However, there are times I’ll grab a soda, but I try not to.
