In Conversation with JJ Samie Myles
Q. What was the most challenging part of writing your latest book?
A. Being obedient to God. He gave me some difficult topics to write about, and I just wanted to run in the other direction. Kinda like Jonah, I guess. But we all know how that story ends, haha.
Q. Do you draw inspiration from real life events or people?
A. All the time. I’ve experienced a lot of real-life scenarios that make for great book content. And yes, some of my characters are inspired by real people—heroes and villains alike.
Q. What themes or messages do you hope readers take away from your work?
A. My main writing goal is to point readers to Jesus. I weave different faith themes into each book and pray they find soil.
Q. What has been the most rewarding part of your writing journey so far?
A. The way God has been using my books to reach readers. Absolutely mind-blowing. There’s so much He can do with our obedience.
Q. Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or books you’re working on?
A. I’m currently working on Elusive Evil (Task Force SEAR 2), a story about a Christian paramilitary team that hunts terrorists who target churches. It’s inspired by a real-life event that occurred while I was in the mission field in Indonesia. Readers can expect lots of action, team banter, encouraging faith themes, and romance. My books are on the grittier side, and Elusive Evil is no exception.
Q. How has God used your writing to grow your own faith?
A. He’s been teaching me to focus on Him rather than on the feedback I (might) get from readers. The Lord tells me what to write, and I obey. Then it’s up to Him to bring the story to the right readers and do His work in them. It’s an important lesson that applies to all areas of my life.
Q. Do you have a particular Bible verse or passage that undergirds your writing?
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10
